The fake coin has the wrong color toning. Purple toning only appears naturally on .999 fine silver, not the .8924 fineness this coin should be. That is the visual dead giveaway that this coin is a fake.

Regarding the 1795 counterfeit dollar article, the illustration is an obvious fake. I however, owned a 1795 dollar for 10 years that was certified by a well known company, but not NGC nor PCGS, and only within the last month did I learn from PCGS that it was a counterfeit when I submitted it to PCGS for crossover service. The coin was purchased about 9 years ago and was a VERY convincing fake, variety B-7. I am trying to find out where these fakes were coming from as this it long before the current influx of chinese fakes. The certification company has worked with me on this and we are now in the process of tracking down the seller in the hopes that he will have some information. Just a note to your readers, be VERY careful for 1795 dollars because even before the Chinese got into it big time, someone was out there making really convincing copies 9 or 10 years ago! My coin is now in possession of the certifying company and I have been reinbursed my cost for the coin. I'm thinking that there may be many more coins out there that are copies that can fool the experts.

There are three classes of 1804 Silver Dollars. Class I coins were made @ 1834 - eight examples are known of this type

Class II examples were made after 1857 - and there is only known specimen

Class III examples were also made after 1857 - Currently, six are known.

So bottom line is there are 15 known example in total.

How many 1804 dollars are speculated to be unaccounted for? Is there any estimate at all?
