I am new at coin collecting, pretty much a preschooler, but learning as I go. Yesterday I visited a coin and bullion store in Panama City, FL, I was interested in a gold St. Gaudens for my collection. The salesman asked if I had a particular coin of interest. I was unsure as there are so many to choose from, and frankly I was like a kid in a candy store eye balling all the coins in the cases, probably a mistake, I should have studied more. He went in the back room where I guess they keep most of the more valuable coins, he brought out two 1908 St. Gaudens without motto, no mint mark, both were in great condition but were circulated coins I would guess, and they were not graded and had light wear. I paid $1100. Did I make a mistake? A/O did I merely buy a nice coin at the normal markup over Gold bullion market prices?

I'm just starting (at age 62) with common date St. Gaudens, but have been hearing about his series most of my life. Figured it was about time to own a piece(or pieces) of history! Great article and input!
