Gold and Silver Rarities Highlight Heritage’s September Long Beach Signature Auction!
Dallas, TX. The Official Auctions of the September 2007 Long Beach Coin Expo will be held by Heritage Auction Galleries the final week of September in Long Beach, California. Heritage will present Signature Auctions of U.S. coins (Sept. 27-28), U.S. tokens and medals (Sept. 27-28), U.S. currency (Sept. 28-29), and ancient and world coins (Sept. 27-28). Individual lots in Heritage’s 61st Official Auction at Long Beach, with descriptions and images, are currently posted at HA.com.
“The September Long Beach Signature catalog of U.S. coins,” noted Heritage President Greg Rohan, “contains numerous wonderful rarities from both the silver and gold series, with many high Registry-level coins; we are especially pleased to be offering The Jim O’Neal Collection of Indian Half Eagles and The #3 PCGS ‘Mile High’ Registry Set of Carson City Morgan Dollars. Altogether, more than 8,000 U.S. coin lots will be available for viewing in Long Beach, and when all of the other lots are added in, nearly 20,000 lots of numismatic treasures will be available for inspection and bidding.”
September 2007 Long Beach U.S. Coin Highlights:
Lot 101: 1812 Large Cent, Small Date MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. S-290, B-2, R.1
Less than 10 Mint State examples of S-290 appear in the major large cent census listings; this specimen is tied for the finest known.
Lot 293: 1907 Victor D. Brenner Lincoln Plaque and Autographed Card with V.D.B. Cent
This 180 mm x 240 mm x 8 mm plaque was the model for the 1909 Lincoln cent.
Lot 696: 1918-S Buffalo Nickel, MS65 PCGS. Ex: ADM Collection
The 1918-S has long been recognized as one of the most challenging issues in the early Buffalo nickel series. Only one certified finer.
Lot 731: 1925-D Buffalo Nickel, MS66 NGC
Unlike the typical 1925-D Buffalo, this example is sharply struck with exceptional detail; none certified finer.
Lot 844: 1797 Half Dime, 16 Stars, MS62 NGC, V-4, LM-2, R.4
As most Draped Bust Small Eagle half dimes are in low grades, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a handsome Mint State example.
Lot 982: 1837 No Stars Dime, PR65 PCGS. Large Date
The No Stars Liberty Seated dime was only struck in proof during 1837; this is one of two certified in this grade, with only one finer.
Lot 1152: 1796 Quarter, High 6, AU55 NGC, B-2, R.3
The 6 in the date nearly touches the bottom of the drapery on this interesting variety that is destined to form the centerpiece of a fine and memorable collection.
Lot 1175: 1827/3 Quarter, PR65 NGC Restrike
This example is tied with two others, with only one certified finer.
Lot 1479: 1818/7 Half Dollar, Large 8 MS65 NGC, O-101a. Ex: Eliasberg.
Probably the finest known 1818/7 half dollar.
Lot 1519: 1836/1336 Lettered Edge Half Dollar, PR63 PCGS. O-108.
Lettered Edge proofs of 1836 are known from several different dies, and this is a most interesting variant.
Lot 1527: 1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, PR63 PCGS
Rare with only 1,200 pieces business strikes, but only 10 to 12 proofs were struck, with this among the finest known.
Lot 1583: 1854 Arrows Half Dollar, PR65 NGC
Among the finest of perhaps twenty proof coins known.
Lot 1660: 1903 Half Dollar, PR68 NGC
Of the 755 specimens struck, none have been certified finer
Lot 1847: 1794 Dollar with XF Details, B-1, BB-1, R.4.
This is the Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, with shortened curls from a Mint attempt to efface clash marks, which are still evident on the field near the mouth and beneath the jaw, and an extensive pedigree.
Lot 1866: 1798 Dollar, Small Eagle, 15 Stars Obverse, AU58 NGC. B-2, BB-81, R.3
A transitional year for silver dollars, with two distinct design types produced.
Lot 1903: 1836 Gobrecht Dollar, Name Below Base, NCS Proof. Judd-58 Restrike
This features Die Alignment III, with the center of Liberty’s head opposite N in ONE.
Lot 1917: 1851 Seated Dollar, MS62 PCGS
The 1851 is a famous rarity within the Seated Liberty series, with 1,300 coins struck, and only seven certified finer. From The Beau Clerc Collection.
Lot 2225: 1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar Round, MS62 NGC
Pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are luminous with a touch of alloy near the owl’s right (facing) wing. From The Diemer L. Fife Collection.
Lot 2303: 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, MS68 PCGS
An amazing gleaming, snowy-white Superb Gem with peerless fields and a creamy-smooth portrait, with none certified finer. From The #3 PCGS ‘Mile High’ Registry Set of Carson City Morgan Dollars.
Lot 2306: 1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS64 PCGS

Lot 2495: 1884-S Morgan Dollar, MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC
This issue had previously been described as “unknown” in Deep Mirror Prooflike.
Lot 2742: 1894 Morgan Dollar, MS66 PCGS
One of only four coins certified in this grade, with none finer.
Lot 2914: 1895 Morgan Dollar, PR61 PCGS
A desirable survivor from this issue of only 880 specimens. From The Beau Clerc Collection.
Lot 2915: 1895 Morgan Dollar, PR62 PCGS
Few collectors of Morgan dollars ever obtain an example of the 1895 proof. A second example from the Beau Clerc Collection.
Lot 3173: 1881 Gold Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS
With a mintage of only 87 coins, and none have been certified finer.
Lot 3177: 1821 $2.50, AU58 PCGS
After 1808, quarter eagle production ceased until 1821.
Lot 3196: 1842-D $2.50, MS61 NGC. Variety 3-F.
A mere 4,643 pieces were struck, and only one has been certified finer.
Lot 3268: 1865 $2.50, PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS
Only 25 proof quarter eagles were coined, some with a medal turn, and some, like this one, with a coin turn.
Lot 3315: 1909 $2.50, PR64 NGC
The 139 so-called “Roman Finish” proofs of 1909 and 1910 were a reaction to the matte proofs of 1908.
Lot 3325: 1855 $3, MS64 PCGS
Although the mintage of 50,555 coins is third highest in the series, better Mint State grades are rare; only four certified finer.
Lot 3363: 1871 $3, PR63 Cameo NGC
Only thirty proofs were minted, and none have been certified finer.
Lot 3365: 1879 Flowing Hair Stella $4, Judd-1635, PR66 Cameo NGC
The 1879- and 1880-dated $4s, or stellas, were a pet project of the Hon. John Adam Kasson (1822-1910) of Des Moines, Iowa, “envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary” to Austria-Hungary from 1877 to 1881. Only eight Cameo pieces have been certified finer.
Lot 3370: 1803/2 $5 MS63 PCGS, BD-4, R.4
The only 1803-dated variety with a perfect T in LIBERTY.
Lot 3376: 1810 Large Date, Large 5 $5, MS63 NGC. BD-4, R.2
A simply splendid example of this early gold type coin.
Lot 3382: 1813 $5 MS64 NGC, BD-1, R.2
The 1813 half eagle is the first year of the new type.
Lot 3400: 1840-O $5 Narrow Mill, MS63 NGC
Among the finest known of less than 200 survivors that experts agree exist in all grades, with only one certified finer.
Lot 3436: 1864 $5, MS61 PCGS
Tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS.
Lot 3463: 1882-CC $5, MS63 NGC
This is the single finest certified 1882-CC half eagle.
Lot 3489: 1901 $5, MS67 NGC
A fully struck, immaculate coin; none certified finer.
Lot 3500: 1907-D Liberty $5, MS67 PCGS
An amazing Superb Gem, the only such piece ever certified by PCGS with none finer.
Lot 3502: 1895 $5, PR66 Cameo PCGS
An amazing Cameo proof, with rich honey-gold color; with only one Deep Cameo certified finer.
Lot 3503: 1899 $5, PR64 PCGS
An official mintage of just 99 pieces, with only two certified finer.
Lot 3506: 1908-D $5, MS65 PCGS

Lot 3510: 1909-O $5 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Cherny Collection. Variety One

Lot 3516: 1911-D $5, MS64 PCGS

Lot 3523: 1914-D $5 MS66 PCGS

The 1914-S Indian Five Dollar is the ‘key’ to the series in MS64 or higher; only one certified finer. From The Jim O’Neal Collection of Indian Half Eagles.
Lot 3570: 1795 Small Eagle $10, 13 Leaves, AU50 PCGS. BD-1, High R.3
The Small Eagle reverse design of the American coins of 1795-1797 may have been adapted from an early Roman onyx cameo in the Kunshistorisches Museum, which also features a similar palm branch and circular wreath.
Lot 3571: 1797 $10, AU55 NGC, BD-2, High R.4
One obverse die was married to three reverse dies to create three distinct varieties.
Lot 3581: 1801 $10 MS63 NGC. BD-2, R.2
The Wide Date variant is distinctly different from its Close Date counterpart.
Lot 3617: 1875-CC $10, AU55 NGC
In most years, the Philadelphia issue would have a much higher mintage than that of the Carson City pieces. In 1875, Carson City actually struck more Eagles that Philadelphia, but only three have been certified finer.
Lot 3718: 1913 $10, MS66 PCGS
Only one coin has been certified as finer by the two major grading services; simply amazing quality and one of the finest P-mint tens available.
Lot 3794: 1865 $20, MS65 NGC
The final Type One Philadelphia Mint double eagle issue.
Lot 3797: 1866-S $20, No Motto, AU55 NGC
Ample luster remains on this Choice AU specimen, with only four certified finer.
Lot 3838: 1877-CC $20, MS62 PCGS
In recent decades, many circulated 1877-CC double eagles have returned from Europe, but they remain elusive in Mint State; this is one of seven in MS62 with none certified finer.
Lot 3851: 1879-S $20, MS64 PCGS
The finest certified example of this conditionally elusive issue.
Lot 4065: 1913-S $20, MS65 PCGS
Of the 52 different Saint-Gaudens double eagle issues, the 1913-S has the third lowest recorded mintage of coins at just 34,000 pieces; only one has been certified finer.
Lot 4131: 1927-S $20, MS64 PCGS
Among the finest ‘27-S Saints, with five MS64s certified, and only eight finer.
