35,401 1922 High Relief circulation strikes were minted, all or nearly all of which were subsequently melted. A solitary 1922 High Relief Peace dollar exists with non-Proof finish, a VF coin. Perhaps it is from the original business strike mintage, or it may be a Proof that was spent.

The high-relief design of 1921 was more attractive than the lower-relief one used in 1922 and after. The soft 90% silver alloy used then allowed for both the high relief and the good details seen on this and other silver coins of the era.

Unfortunately, besides breaking dies, the high relief design also wore quickly in circulation, thus reducing the number of truly uncirculated specimens. The high relief coins were also susceptible to damage when the coins were stored in bags. As a result, 1921 Peace dollars in MS-65 and higher are rare and command high prices.
