Reference your statement: "Some business strike and proof coins are certified as First Strikes or Early Releases, indicating their release early in the Mint distribution process." This is not an accurate statement. The First Strike, Early Release, First Release, etc. designationgs by Third party Certification companies is not an indication when the coin was minted. It is an indication merely of when the coin was received at the grading company, usually within the first 30 days of issue. Many coins are minted in huge proportions and even entireity long before they are issued and held by the mint in storage. They are not distributed in any order. So a certified coin with one of these designations could, in fact, be the last coin minted. These designations are merely marketing programs from the certification companies as the U.S. Mint does not have a First Strike program, and is discussed on the U.S. Mint website.

Thank you for this very comprehensive article. I notice, though, that there is no mention of 'errors'. I am specifically interested in finding out more about reverse errors. How does it happen that they come into circulation? I have a 1986 Silver Eagle with a reverse error. I find lots on the web about 2007-08 reverse errors but nothing about mine. If this is not the right forum - please forgive the inquiry but I would so appreciate any info...

Thanks so much!
