Night metal detectors ‘looting Britain’

Archaelogists have warned that Britain’s historical artefacts are being looted by unscrupulous metal detector enthusiasts. They believe “nighthawking” - illegal searches at protected historical sites, the removal of items without permission from landowners or the failure to declare valuable finds - is being fuelled by the internet, which allows criminals to make thousands of pounds selling jewellery and ancient coins.

Cuba fights fakers of tourist paper notes

Cuba has a double standard regarding its currency. There is the Cuban peso system used by average citizen, and there is the “pesos convertible” system in theory used exclusively by foreign visitors but in fact also used by members of the ruling Communist Party elite. Both systems include coins and bank notes, but the standard system is not convertible into any other country’s hard currency. The pesos convertible currency is exchanged for hard currencies when someone enters Cuba.

Final zero hand-applied to Aussie No. 1000000 notes

The February 2007 Brisbane sale of Roxbury’s Auction House saw an intriguing item of Aussie paper passed in. I was a bit surprised and can only conclude that the reserve had been set too high or that the market hasn’t become fully aware of the significance and rarity of such an item. Yet, for any dedicated collector of Australian notes, this item would seem to be a must. The note was regular issue Coombs/Wilson £5, Standard Catalog of World Paper Money No. P-31, except that it bore the serial number 1000000.
