Gold, Silver Decline as Dollar’s Slump Against Euro Stalls

Gold fell from a two-month high in New York as the dollar’s decline against the euro stalled, reducing the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative investment. Silver also dropped. The dollar rebounded from a record $1.3845 against the euro as a price chart some investors use to predict currency movements suggested the decline was too rapid. Before today, gold had gained 7.3 percent this year, and the dollar slumped 4.6 percent against the euro. “The dollar started off weak this morning, and now is coming back a bit,” said Marty McNeill, a trader at R.F. Lafferty & Co. in New York. “Gold’s really taking the cue from that.”

Winners of the PCGS Set Registry Awards Reach New Heights

The winners for the 2007 PCGS Set RegistrySM Awards were announced today. The judges, a panel of PCGS experts consisting of John Dannreuther, PCGS Founder; Ron Guth, President of PCGS; and David Hall, President of Collectors Universe and PCGS Founder reviewed all sets after the deadline on June 29, 2007. With over 27,000 sets registered by more than 3,400 active members, this year’s PCGS Set Registry awards competition definitely reached new heights of numismatic achievement. In fact, there were so many great sets that the number of awards was expanded from 20 to 30 in the Classic and Modern set categories. Congratulations are in order for all participants.

Capped Bust Quarter Leads Heritage Auction

An 1827/3 Capped Bust quarter restrike that sold for $126,500 is the top lot in Heritage Auction Galleries’ sale at the Summer Florida United Numismatists show in West Palm Beach.

The Heritage cataloger specified that the die rust and other markers on this piece indicate that it is from a later group of restrikes, from which about a dozen pieces are known. This one was graded Proof-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. It sold to an Internet bidder. The total prices realized in the July 12-13 auction was not available by press time. All prices reported here include buyer fees. An 1893-O Morgan dollar in NGC MS-65 came in next at $115,000.

Malta leaves unique mark on euro coins

The most important Viking treasure find in Britain for 150 years has been unearthed by a father and son while metal detecting in Yorkshire. The hoard was discovered earlier this year at Harrogate. It contains 617 silver coins and 65 other objects, including a gold arm-ring; all were hidden in a gilt silver bowl and buried in a lead chest. It was declared as a treasure at a court hearing in Harrogate on Thursday. The British Museum wants to purchase it for public display. The proceeds will be split between the finders and landowners.
