Fabled $3 Million Nickel Returns “Home” to Milwaukee

A legendary multi-million dollar rare nickel that a Milwaukee collector frequently kept in his pocket to show to strangers returns “home” for the first time in 40 years for a free public exhibit. The coin is a 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of only five known and made under mysterious circumstances at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. Valued today at $3 million, the rare nickel will be one of dozens of eye-opening exhibits — including a $1 billion U.S. Treasury Department display — during the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money.

The Grading Standard That Never Changes¦On Display For You To See

The PCGS Grading Standard was first used by the numismatic community; both the collectors who buy the coin and the dealers who sell them, in 1986. At that time, the PCGS Grading Standard was the consensus opinion of the grading experts at PCGS, along with comments and suggestions from the dealer-experts who provided PCGS with input on PCGS grading. In 1988, PCGS constructed a grading set. The PCGS Grading Set consisted of a small group of example coins in various grades from the major coins series, including $20 Saint Gaudens and Morgan and Peace dollars. The grading set was used as a reference by PCGS graders and was also displayed at major coin shows.

AU-58 coins often worth worth more than Mint State coins

Over the years About Uncirculated 58 graded coins have been called “Super Sliders,” “Borderline Uncirculated,” “Unc. with rub” or other interesting terms. Coins graded AU-58 just miss being full Mint State because they have a slight amount of friction on the design high points. The difference between an AU-58 coin and an AU-55 piece, with the same level of slight wear, is usually in the number of contact marks on the coins. An AU-58 coin should have fewer contact marks.
