Proof Gold Glitters at Heritage’s Phoenix ANA Signature Auction, Now Posted at HA.com

Dallas, TX. The catalog for the Official Auction of the ANA’s Phoenix National Money Show has been posted by Heritage Auction Galleries on their HA.com website. The 2,000 lots included are available for viewing and bidding online. The Auction dates are March 6-7, 2008, at the Phoenix Convention Center.

“Every ANA auction is special,” commented Heritage President Greg Rohan, “and Phoenix will be memorable for the incredible gold proofs of the Ultra Collection plus those contributed from our other consignors. Also containing coins across all denominations, with many among the finest known, this catalog presents incredible opportunities for both the specialist and the type collector who requires the very best.”

“As this catalog was being sent to the printer,” concluded Rohan, “we surpassed 350,000 registered bidder-members at our HA.com website. This is a singular achievement, and speaks well of the continued growth of the collectibles markets. We look forward to the Phoenix event.”

Highlights from Heritage’s Phoenix ANA Signature Auction:

Lot 45: 1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT MS63 NGC. Crosby Pl. VIII, Newman 3-D, Breen-1095, R.3.
The NGC holder describes this piece as “silver” but we are quite certain it is actually pewter.

Lot 138: 1792 Washington Getz pattern cent, Small Eagle, Copper XF40 PCGS. Baker-25. Breen-1352.
The dies for this well executed, plain-edged pattern Cent were engraved by Peter Getz of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, based on designs of young English engraver John Gregory Hancock.

Lot 637: 1794 O-105a half dollar, AU53 NGC
This is the later die state 105a, as evidenced by the die crack from 11 o’clock at the reverse edge through the first T in STATES to the leaf.

Lot 650: 1821 O-103 Half dollar, SP67 Star NGC
This coin is probably the only proof 1821 O-103 that exists; it has been documented as a proof for over half a century, and possibly long before that.

Lot 844: 1865 $1 PR68 NGC
Of the 373 proof silver dollars of this date currently certified by NGC and PCGS, this stands above all others with regard to state of preservation and technical grade.

Lot 1045: 1889-CC Morgan dollar, MS63 PCGS
This is the rarest and most desirable Carson City Morgan dollar coined from 1878 to 1893. From The Oxford Collection.

Lot 1113: 1892-S Morgan dollar, MS62 NGC

During 1892, the San Francisco Mint struck precisely 100,000 pieces each month; they are noted rarities in better grades.

Lot 1136: 1893-S Morgan dollar AU55 PCGS
This coin’s overall visual appeal is solid, and the fields retain the vast majority of their modestly reflective luster. From The Oxford Collection. Ex: Mike Casper II.

Lot 1227: 1895 Morgan dollar PR63 PCGS
The 1895 is easily the most discussed Morgan proof issue and the one that receives the most attention from numismatists. From The Oxford Collection.

Lot 1228: 1895 Morgan dollar PR64 PCGS
It is possible that numismatists will never discover what happened to the missing 12,000 circulation strikes (or even if they ever existed).

Lot 1328: 1942 White Metal pattern cent, Judd-2081, Pollock-2077, High R.7, PR66 PCGS
Regular dies for the Lincoln cent, struck in white metal with a plain edge.

Lot 1356: 1865 Gold dollar, MS68 PCGS. CAC.
The mintage of 1865 gold dollars was a minuscule 3,725 examples — among the lowest of the entire Type Three series; this is tied for the finest certified.

Lot 1366: 1881 Gold dollar, PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC
Only 87 proof gold dollars were struck in 1881; only two pieces have been graded PR67 Ultra Cameo, with none finer (1/08). From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1414: 1870 $2.50, PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC
The Philadelphia Mint only struck 35 proof quarter eagles in 1870, but in two batches: 25 were issued as part of gold proof sets on February 3, and the other 10 on June 1.

Lot 1415: 1891 $2.50, PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC
Christian Gobrecht’s Coronet gold design lasted more than a decade after the last appearance of the Liberty Seated design. NGC has graded none finer. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1416: 1899 $2.50 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC
Two different obverse dies were used to manufacture the proof 1899 quarter eagles, even though only 150 proofs were produced. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1448: 1889 $3 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC
The $3 denomination ended with the same law that eliminated the gold dollar. In 1889 there were 129 proofs struck, and this Ultra Cameo is the finest (and only) piece certified by NGC. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1450: 1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3 PR65 Cameo PCGS.
Numismatic tradition is that 425 of these four dollar gold pieces were coined in 1879, but whatever the actual mintage, only 11 have been certified finer (1/08). From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1451: 1880 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1657, Pollock-1857, R.6, PR66 Cameo NGC
Unlike the more plentiful 1879 Flowing Hair stellas, the 1880 pieces are quite rare, with less than 20 pieces known. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1480: 1856-C $5 MS63 PCGS, Variety 24-J.
The 1856-C is rare in Mint State; this is the highest graded and only certified MS63 at either service (with only two pieces listed in MS62!).

Lot 1511: 1881 $5, PR67 Cameo NGC
Proof 1881 fives are rarely available, with only 42 pieces minted; less than half of the total production has survived, and this is one of the finest.

Lot 1512: 1884 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC
Only three examples of this rare, underrated issue have been graded thus by NGC, with none finer. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1514: 1894 $5 PR67 Star Ultra Cameo NGC
Only 75 pieces of the proof 1894 $5 were struck, and only 20 to 30 coins are known in all grades; this is the finest certified by either service. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1589: 1872 $10 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC
In either proof (30 pieces) or business strike (1620 pieces) format, the 1872 is a formidable rarity. Only two certified finer. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1599: 1907 Wire Rim, Periods $10 MS65 NGC
Saint-Gaudens modeled this side-view portrait of Liberty’s head after the head of Victory (Athena Nike) from his General Sherman monument in NYC. One of only 500 minted.

Lot 1649: 1861-O $20 AU58 PCGS
Of the 17,741 1861-O pieces coined at the New Orleans Mint, only 5,000 were struck under the authority of the United States, with 9,750 double eagles for Louisiana as an independent state, and 2,991 under the auspices of the CSA. Only two certified finer.

Lot 1758: 1888 $20 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC
Only 103 proofs were produced, and perhaps 30 existing today; this is a spectacular, deeply mirrored example. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1759: 1899 $20 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC
The mintage for the 1899 proof twenty is recorded as 84 pieces, but it is likely that less than 30 pieces exist. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1766: 1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS69 PCGS. CAC.
Mint Director Leach had the pieces struck to satisfy President Roosevelt’s desires for high relief coinage, all the while realizing that the design was impractical for modern, one-blow circulation coinage. None have been certified finer. Ex: Trompeter Collection; The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

Lot 1767: 1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS65 PCGS
An extraordinary example of the most coveted 20th century gold issue. From The Ultra Collection.

Lot 1817: 1911 $20 PR66 NGC
All Matte proof gold is extremely rare, and nearly impossible to acquire in Gem or finer quality.

Lot 1826: Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot, 93.84 Ounces. $1726.45. No 1031. Mold KH-04.
When the S.S. Central America sank on September 12, the loss of gold further exacerbated the payment of specie by many New York banks. Every surface of this ingot is irregularly coated with deep reddish-rust patina.
