The Glenn E. Bergstrom Collection to be offered by Stacks
On June 25, 2008 Stacks will host a spectacular one-day sale of a truly remarkable collection. The new auction facilities were inaugurated last month with the sale of The Minot Collection. The auction will begin at 12:30pm sharp with the sale of the Glenn E. Bergstrom Collection and other important properties.
Kicking off the sale will be a small offering of colonial and early American pieces, with the 1737 3 Hammers Higley copper undoubtedly at the fore. There are perhaps six to twelve examples known in all grades, making this coin so rare that most advanced specialists cannot boast a specimen of their own!
After this auspicious beginning, the sale continues with solid offerings of minor coinage, including an attractive (and affordable!) 1804 quarter dollar. An 1823/2 quarter also commands attention, while the 1835 proof quarter (the Eliasberg specimen) combines great beauty with a great pedigree. A 1916 Standing Liberty quarter in AU-58 (NGC) represents a good opportunity to acquire a relatively affordable example of this scarce issue. Moving into the half dollars, a beautiful 1795 Overton-114 example in MS-64 (NGC) (finest known) steals the limelight, and is followed in turn by a number of attractive Draped Bust half dollars and, later, an excellent 1861 Scott restrike Confederate half dollar.
The ever-popular silver dollar category reveals many an opportunity. A lovely 1795 dollar graded AU-55 (NGC) begins the section, and is closely followed by an attractively toned 1798 B-21 in AU-55. Two 1836 Gobrecht dollars (both Judd-60, Die Alignment IV) represent their denomination strongly, with the first weighing in at an impressive Proof-62 (PCGS) and the second a Proof-61. A notable selection of Seated and Trade dollars is followed by the always popular Morgan series. This section offers a variety of common and scarce dates, with ten examples of the low-mintage and important 1889-CC issue, including an MS-63 example! A small offering of Peace dollars immediately follows, and is highlighted by a rarely-seen 1921 Satin Proof-64 (NGC). Commemoratives, groups, and sets round out this segment.
U.S. gold begins with a nice section of gold dollars before launching the quarter eagles off with a landmark 1808 one-year-only Capped Bust type, and immediately followed by a pretty 1821 in AU-53 (NGC). Other highlights of the section include an 1858-C graded MS-62 by PCGS and a 1900 Proof-66 Ultra Cameo (NGC). A gorgeous 1806 Knobbed 6 half eagle graded MS-63 is sure to impress, and an 1812 Wide 5 half eagle in MS-63 (PCGS) will certainly attract attention. The half eagles are rounded out by the classic 1929 rarity graded MS-64 by NGC.
The eagles open with a nice selection of early tens, including an enticing 1801 graded MS-61 (PCGS). An excellent selection of Liberty and Indian Head eagles follows, with a wonderful 1932 certified as MS-66 by NGC. The double eagles encompass a fair spectrum of dates, and include two examples of the prized 1871-CC, one in AU-50 (PCI) and the other graded EF-45. Gold commemoratives, two pieces of territorial gold, and three lots of world gold coins conclude the sale of the Glenn E. Bergstrom Collection.
