Spink Smythe to Offer Part 14 of the Schingoethe Obsolete Currency Collection, April 9th, 2008

Red stamped on backWhen it came to coins and paper money Herb Schingoethe collected almost everything, but it was obsolete currency that his wife Martha liked to collect most of all. She fell in love with the incredible diversity of issuers, and with the artistic quality of the vignettes on the notes. She enjoyed meeting and dealing with the people who bought and and sold obsolete currency. Martha had the skills and the energy required to organize and maintain everything they acquired. Her husband Herb had the passion to collect on a grand scale. Together they created what is now known as the Schingoethe collection.

On April 9th, 2008 Spink Smythe will be offering part 14, as this incredible collection continuing the tradition of exceptional rarities and choice notes from many diverse series. This sale feature the final section of Illinois notes from Herb’s core Illinois collection that were treasured by Herb and Martha. The sale also includes many western rarities including some exceptionally rare Utah notes. Smythe March 20th U.S. & World Paper Money Auction

Banque de l'Indo-Chine. [Estimate $100,000 to $125,000] The R. M. Smythe & Company spring paper money auction on March 20th 2008 will offer 890 lots of paper money at their Manhattan office. One of the more interesting lots of world banknotes will be the specimens of Siam banknotes, in particular the 20, 80, and 100 Tical denominations, are believed to be the only examples know to exist. They once resided in a Paris museum, were purchased by a dealer 15 years ago for $90,000, and recently were owned by the President of the Thailand Numismatic Association.

The spring sale will also include a wide selection of U.S. and World Notes, including; U.S. Large & Small size, 50’s and 100’s FRN’s Small Size Collection, U.S. Small Size Errors, U.S. Fractional Currency, National Banknotes, Colonial Currency, Historic Documents, Confederate Currency and Bonds, Obsolete Currency, Obsolete Sheets and miscellaneous historical items. Smythe Sale of Schingoethe Obsolete Currency Collection Sees Record Prices.

Smythe Auction ResultsManhattan, New York - December 18, 2007 - On Dec. 12 -13, the R.M. Smythe & Co. auction of part 13 of the The Schingoethe collection of obsolete currency generated a great deal of interest from bidders. 94% of the 1162 lots offered were sold totaling $450,000 in sales. Many of the more unique and rare items far surpassed their pre-auction estimates, perhaps signaling a significant upsurge in interest for obsolete currency.

Of particular note was a $10 bill issued by the Merchants & Planters Bank of Tallahassee Florida Ca. 1830s-40s. (FL-70 G10). The bill pictured; a man plowing, top; 10s in geometric die counters, top left and right; Mercury bears cornucopia with coins, Juno Moneta seated, left; Washington in classical garb, right. RWH. VG, crease, toning. The pre-auction estimate was $150 to $250. The realized price was $3450, including the buyers commission. The $10 Tallahassee note, was not an anomaly.
