Did Victor D. Brenner have something to do with the design for the Standing Liberty quarters of 1916? While there is no evidence to link him directly with Hermon A. MacNeil’s controversial design, there is a startlingly similar medal by Brenner that was used beginning in 1902 as an annual award by the Art Institute of Chicago for the best painting by an American artist.

Featuring a fresh rendition of one of Australia’s most recognizable animals, the 99.99% pure gold coins will be available in bullion weights ranging from 1/10 ounce to 1 kilo. The new design features the image of a kangaroo superimposed on the rays of the rising sun.

Mint Stats: Proof Platinum Eagles Sell Out

The platinum proof one-ounce American Eagle coin sold out as expected by the Aug. 22 Mint report date. All 10,000 were snapped up by collectors in just over a week. This total is 2,000 coins higher than the number sold last year and more than 5,000 higher than the 4,769 sold in 2008. However, mintages in the late 1990s were far higher. The first year of issue in 1997 saw 20,851 sold.

Park Coins Find is One to Treasure

A treasure hunter has unearthed a set of coins believed to be more than 1,750 years old. History buff John Harrison, 60, unearthed 30 of the coins, which are thought to date back to the fall of the Roman Empire, at Holgates Caravan Park’s Far Arnside site on the Lancashire-Cumbria border.
