G20 supports IMF’s plan to sell 403 tons of gold

Leaders from the Group of 20 nations Thursday endorsed the International Monetary Fund’s plan to sell 403 tons of gold to raise funds to support the world’s poorest countries.
The announcement from G20 leaders helped add pressures to Thursday’s gold trading. Gold futures fell $20.30, or 2.2%, to $905.80 an ounce in recent trading on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. See Metals Stocks. The G20 vowed in its statement to “use the additional resources from agreed IMF gold sales for concessional finance for the poorest countries.

Owner of gold coins found in Utah; woman arrested

Mystery solved! The owner of 14 gold coins has been identified, and the woman who took them to a bank near St. George has been arrested. The mystery woman who exchanged the coins has been the subject of gossip and a police investigation for a couple of weeks. Now she’s in jail. At first, the mystery woman seemed to be a sympathetic victim because she got only $20 each for coins worth $900 apiece.

When available, enlargeable images of both sides of the encapsulated coin are shown alongside information from the NGC certification database. Counterfeiters and Authenticators Do Battle

Recently, I wrote a brief synopsis covering the evolution of counterfeit coins that I have witnessed since becoming a professional authenticator in 1972. To continue along this track, let’s roll back the clock a few years and review some of the characteristics commonly seen on older struck counterfeits. One was the lack of relief and the “style” of the letters in the legend. During the transfer process used to prepare many fake dies, the shape of the original coin’s parts was spread out and became slightly rounded. Hence, the counterfeit did not appear to be as sharply defined as the genuine specimen.
