New Information on the Gobrecht Dollars
By R.W. Julian, Numismatic News
In 1954 Walter Breen published The Secret History of the Gobrecht Coinages 1836-1840, which is still useful today. The final sentence in this work is perhaps prophetic in that it says “It is safe to say that the last word on these has yet to be written.” What Breen wrote is still true today in that we do not yet have the full story of the Gobrecht silver dollars of 1836-1839. But some unexpected discoveries have produced surprising new information about this interesting series.

Federal Reserve Governor Confirms Fed Gold Swaps
By Patrick A. Heller, Market Update
Five months ago, the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee (GATA), filed a second Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the Federal Reserve System for documents from 1990 to date having to do with gold swaps, gold swapped, or proposed gold swaps. On Aug. 5, The Federal Reserve responded to this FOIA request by adding two more documents to those disclosed to GATA in April 2008 from the earlier FOIA request. PCGS Grades ‘1992 Cent with Reverse of 1993′
PCGS
On July 24, 2009 Kie Brown from Gales Ferry, Connecticut found a very scare 1992 Lincoln cent displaying a reverse of 1993. The coin is currently estimated to be worth $5,000 to $10,000. Kie Brown initially sent the coin to variety expert and numismatic columnist Ken Potter for evaluation. Ken was very instrumental in providing us information for this coin. To date, this is the only example certified by PCGS and it is only the second reported for this variety. The coin was graded MS62 Red by PCGS. In 1992, the U.S. Mint struck Lincoln cents with the letters “AM” of the word AMERICA spaced apart. This is the norm for all 1992 cents. The following year (1993), the Mint changed the reverse design so the letters “AM” of AMERICA were separated further apart from one another.

U.S. Attorney’s Office Files Civil Forfeiture Complaint in Case of 10 Double Eagle Gold Pieces
U.S. Department of Justice
The Office of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has filed a civil forfeiture complaint against 10 1933 Double Eagle gold pieces, consistent with U.S. District Court Judge Legrome D. Davis’ order dated July 28, 2009. The pieces were surrendered to the U.S. Mint by the descendants of Israel Switt. In addition to forfeiture of the 1933 Double Eagles, the government asks the court to declare that, with the exception of a single 1933 Double Eagle monetized and auctioned for more than $7.5 million in 2002, all other 1933 Double Eagles are the lawful property of the United States government.
