Error Finds Include Dropped Letter

Numismatic News reader Richard Ross of Mississippi submitted a 2007-D Idaho State quarter that boasts what is known as a Dropped Letter or Dropped Design error. A close look at the word LIBERTY on the obverse reveals an incuse “extra” letter “R” positioned low and between the normal R and T. The Dropped Letter is a relatively scarce error type with its origins in the common Filled Die error. When debris, (often referred to by error collectors as “mint goop” or “grease”), clog a die, it may after a few strikes, become compressed within cavities of the die such as numerals, letters or even areas of design.

Biggest Gold ETF Holds Its Weight

Holdings in the world’s largest gold exchange-traded fund are at a record level as 2008 winds down, providing some healthy optimism for the market in coming months. Metal held by SPDR Gold Shares (trading symbol GLD) climbed to 705.90 metric tons on July 11, before backing down to 614.35 in mid-September amid a liquidation selloff throughout the commodities complex. Commemorative €2 coin to be issued in January

A commemorative €2 coin marking the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will be issued in all euro area member states in January 2009. A Central Bank of Malta representative confirmed that the Maltese coins will be issued starting January 5. The coins will be available for purchase in rolls of 25 coins at the price of €57.75 per roll, including VAT, while a number of coins will be issued in normal circulation.
