Lincoln presidential medal is something of a mystery

No mention is found in U.S. Mint records as to why dies were cut and who ordered them for the production of a presidential medal for Abraham Lincoln’s second term, according to author R.W. Julian in Medals of the United States: The First Century 1792-1892. The medal is identified in Julian’s reference as PR-12. Bronze copies of the medal are still being offered for sale by the U.S. Mint, in 3-inch and 1.3125-inch versions. It was designed and engraved by U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan.

The U.S. Mint has a busy year planned for coin collectors in 2009! We will have a record number of new U.S. coins going into circulation this year, including the four new Lincoln Cent designs, four Presidential Dollars, the newly-redesigned Sacagawea Dollar (Agriculture) reverse, and six Territory Quarters. This is in addition to the standard nickels, dimes, and half dollars the Mint produces. The 2009 Uncirculated Mint Set will contain a whopping 36 coins!
