Gobrecht Revisionists Fly in Face of Facts

In the Sept. 9 issue of Numismatic News, Saul Teichman attempted to prove that certain Gobrecht dollars with the eagle flying flat, when rotated, are original coins, the so-called “revisionist” theory. (The Teichman essay was written in answer to a forum letter by Scott Casey.) In defense of this theory, he produces several “facts” which, on close scrutiny, prove not to be facts at all. In preceding articles, Craig Sholley and I wrote jointly, but here I will be covering only those points in my area while Craig will, if thought necessary, cover the other revisionist “facts” by Teichman at a later time.

“Platinum’s turn to shine

The outlook for platinum is improving. Thackray’s 2009 Investor’s Guide notes that platinum has a period of seasonal strength from the end of December to the end of May. The trade has been profitable in 17 of the past 22 periods; the average gain per period was 8.3%. In contrast, the average gain for gold during the same period was only 0.9%.

FUN Show Recap

I had a great time at the FUN coin show in Orlando, Florida this past weekend. What struck me right away was how friendly the bourse (sales floor) seemed to be! At most coin shows, you have all of these old men standing guard behind their tables, staring you down lest you try to snatch something our of their locked cases while they’re blinking, but I didn’t get this feeling at FUN at all!
