State (Ohio) suing coin dealer amid crackdown

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is suing a Long Island, N.Y., state coin dealer as part of a multistate crackdown on alleged consumer fraud. Cordray said Wednesday that his office has filed suit in Hancock County Common Pleas Court against Amityville-based Alliance Coin Inc. and its president, Barry Rothman. The state alleges Alliance violated Ohio consumer protection law, and it wants to levy financial penalties and hold the company responsible for reimbursing consumers.

Online Coin Scams Now Federal Crime

Putting coins up for an Internet auction without the intent of delivering the described merchandise to the winning bidder, and then keeping the money besides, is now provably a federal crime. In a United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, a conviction on those charges has just been sustained by the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, in a decision handed down June 22. Judgment of conviction and sentence was entered on Oct. 12, 2007 The case was argued a year ago and decided last week.

This year’s set contains 18 coins: four Presidential $1 Coins honoring William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor; a new Native American $1 Coin; six commemorative quarter-dollar coins honoring the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories (the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands); four new Lincoln Bicentennial One-Cent Coins struck in honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth; and the Jefferson 5-cent coin, Roosevelt dime and Kennedy half-dollar. The dime, half-dollar, and six quarters are struck in lustrous 90 percent silver.

Gold Museum mints second-edition collector coins

With the Pine Mountain Gold Museum at Stockmar Park entering its second year in operation, new commemorative coins are available to help pay for the construction of new displays. The coins, comprised of a metal alloy with a highly polished brass finish, are available for $35 each at the museum on Stockmar Road. First-edition coins featured the museum’s miner mascot and the new coins feature a picture of the stamp mill. Officials plan to release a third edition in about a year.

Louisa Adams gold coin considered as rarest

The Louisa Adams editions of the US Mint’s First Spouse gold coin range may be the rarest so far. According to Coin News, the 24-c pieces – sales of which stop yesterday could become hard to find as comparatively few have been bought since they went on sale. Figures from the Mint showed that as of Sunday June 28th, 4,223 of the uncirculated coins and 6,950 of the proof examples had been purchased since the items became available 13 months ago.

Mishler received 5,047 votes compared with 3,213 for current ANA Vice President Patricia A. Jagger Finner. Thomas G. Hallenbeck, who ran unopposed, was elected Vice President. Incumbents Chester L. Krause, Joseph E. Boling, Walter Ostromecki Jr., and Wendell Wolka were re-elected along with Board newcomers Scott T. Rottinghaus, J.P. Martin and Jeff C. Garrett.
