Going on the block at Spink’s Singapore sale will be the legendary Sarawak collection of Bill Christensen. Christensen was a member of the Brooke family, one of whose branches provided the White Rajahs of Sarawak. His own forbears migrated to Maryland in the early 18th century.

Which is to say that there were a few people walking around, but little serious activity at the table. Britain’s Royal Mint admits issuing 20-pence coins with no dates in rare mistake

Next time you’re in Britain, check your change. The Royal Mint admits it’s made a rare error, producing coins without a date on them for the first time in centuries. The mint said Monday that at least 100,000 of the year-less 20-pence coins, normally worth 33 U.S. cents at face value, slipped into circulation at the end of last year. If found, one coin would garner hundreds of times more on the collectors’ market.

If a U.S. coin series had to be picked as the biggest laggard in the market, Roosevelt dimes would rank among the top candidates. First struck in 1946, the design comes across as bland when compared to the much more artistic Winged Liberty Head dime of 1916 to 1945. Add in the coin’s small size and secondary status as pocket change in the 21st century, and the climate created does nothing to attract collectors.

The obstacles sculptor and medalist, Victor David Brenner, had to overcome to see his design for the Lincoln penny — finally minted in 1909 — were minor compared to challenges he faced in his native Lithuania before emigrating to America. Near the end of his career, Clara Whiteside, wife of well known artist Frank Reed Whiteside, interviewed Victor Brenner at his Ogunquit studio overlooking Perkins Cove.
