U.S. Mint tries to get consumers to use dollar coins

The government is trying to convince consumers that dollar coins are greener than the dollar bill. The U.S. Mint is spending about $12 million on a pilot project to promote the presidential dollar coin by appealing to Americans’ duty to protect the environment while saving the government money. The campaign, which may be expanded nationwide, stresses that coins last longer than dollar bills, are recyclable and could save tax money if more people used them.

2008-W Platinum Eagles Back on Sale

After nearly two and a half months of suspension and speculation on both sides of question, 2008-W Uncirculated and Proof Platinum Eagles are back on sale at the US Mint. The coins had been suspended since August 7, when the price of platinum was $1,559 per ounce. The pricing for the products had been set earlier in the year when platinum was closer to its highs above the $2,000 level.

Economic turbulence a boon for coin dealers

The state of the economy is actually helping coin dealers, Phil Kaufman says.Sitting behind his booth at the Lower Cape Fear Coin Club’s fall show on Saturday, the Wilmington-based coin dealer said the market for collectible coins is usually strong and steady. As for the more volatile gold and silver market in general, the fear over stocks is encouraging more people to buy those types of coins, Kaufman said. “There’s a lot of interest in gold and silver,” he said. “It seems to be a safe haven for people who have been going through financial difficulties. They’d rather have hard assets than paper stocks.”
