Gold tumbles nearly $25 in commodities sell-off

Gold futures slumped nearly $25 on Tuesday to close at a two-week low, following a broad sell-off in commodities as weaker-than-feared Tropical Depression Gustav undermined oil prices, which fell by as much as $10 a barrel. Gold for December delivery slumped $24.7, or 3%, to end at $810.50 an ounce on the Chicago Board of Trade, the weakest closing level since Aug. 18. It plunged $40 to $795.20 an ounce earlier.

Downies Sells Rare Australian Specimen Set

An extremely rare Australian specimen set was among the large paper money offering that formed part of Downies 299th auction held in Melbourne on July 9 and 10. It consisted of two, complete, $2 to $100, Johnston-Fraser, 1985 paper note sets, Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Nos. 43e, 44e, 45e, 46e, 47e, 48b, but overprinted “SPECIMEN” in small red print over the watermark on the fronts and backs.
