New Bahamas $100 Note

On 16 December 2009 the Central Bank of the Bahamas introduced a more secure 100-dollar banknote. This is the sixth and final denomination issued in the new CRISP (Counterfeit Resistance Integrated Security Product) family of notes. The new notes will circulate in parallel with the old $100 notes, which will eventually be phased out of circulation.

Republic of Vermont Rises Again?

As many numismatists know, the Republic of Vermont has high stature in our hobby. This colony was not able to join the Union in the 1780s for several reasons, most important being the resistance of powerful New York, with which it had a border dispute. Finally, in 1791 Vermont became the 14th state. In the meantime, in 1785, Reuben Harmon, Jr., of Rupert, secured a franchise to make coins, from the Vermont government. He proceeded to have dies cut, and coins with a “landscape” design on the obverse (sun peeping over a forested ridge) and with an all-seeing eye and glory of rays on the reverse, were struck and circulated.

One of the broad styles or modes of collecting coins, type collecting consists of acquiring and owning a series of coins, each representative of a subset, or “type” of coin. A type set of double eagles, for example, would include coins exemplifying its various designs over the years, both long-lived (such as the “Type Three” Liberty double eagle with denomination spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS, struck from 1877 to 1907) and short-lived (the High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle was made only briefly in the latter year).

Snow Cancels Series 2009 FRN Introduction

Snow has forced the cancellation today of the “Push the Button” ceremony to introduce the new Series 2009 Federal Reserve Notes at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing plant in Fort Worth, Texas. Treasurer Rosie Rios was to make the journey to Texas to head up the event, but the storm that hit the nation’s capital and the resulting airport closures made that impossible.

Zion National Park Coin Aboard the Shuttle Endeavor

An image of Utah’s Zion National Park is flying through space onboard the space shuttle Endeavour on its current mission to the International Space Station. Superintendent Jock Whitworth says the commemorative coin was carried onboard by Lt. Col. Robert Behnken, a mission specialist. The coin’s space journey marks the final official event in celebration of the first century anniversary of Zion National Park since its initial establishment as Mukuntuweap National Monument on July 31, 1909.

About the Author
Tim Shuck is a life-long Midwestern resident, and started collecting coins after finding an Indian Head cent on the ground at his childhood farm home. Additional encouragement came from looking through a collection of well-worn late 19th and early 20th century coins kept by his grandfather in an old leather coin purse. Current collecting interests include U.S. types from the Civil War era through the early 1930's, and Colonial and Early American coins.
