Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee Vacancy
U.S. Mint
The United States Mint is seeking applicants for appointment to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC). The term of one CCAC member will expire in March 2010. The new member would represent the interests of the general public. The application deadline is March 31, 2010. The United States Mint will review all applications and will forward recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury for appointment consideration.

This is a huge task, but I am slowly chipping away at it with the help of many contributors around the globe. Some Presidential Dollar Products No Longer Available

Sales recently ended for a few of the US Mint’s Presidential Dollar products. This includes last year’s annual Proof Set and the bags and rolls for the James Monroe Dollars. The 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Set is no longer available. This set first went on sale February 10, 2009 priced at $14.95 each. The set contains the four different Presidential Dollars for that year featuring William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor.

In it they said they were going to be giving away state and National Parks quarters. “Is there a more general term that could be used to encompass both types of quarters? Would ‘commemorative quarters’ be correct, or is there a better term?” Naturally, I put my editor’s hat on and ended up writing a long reply.

Metal Detectorists Support Convicted British Woman

A Shropshire woman who admitted failing to report finding a possible piece of treasure has received support from an online community of metal detecting enthusiasts who claim she could be the victim of a miscarriage of justice. Kate Harding, 23, of The Hawthorns, Ludlow, was given a three-month conditional discharge last week and ordered to pay £25 costs for failing to report the finding of a piedfort to the south Shropshire coroner.

New Coinage Press for New U.S. Silver Coins

A new coining press was to be installed at the Philadelphia Mint March 1 for the purpose of striking the new 5-ounce America the Beautiful silver coins that will be the companion pieces to the 56 circulating quarters to be released starting in April of this year and running at a rate of five designs per year until 2021. The Mint purchased the press for an undisclosed sum from the German firm of Gräbener Pressensysteme GmbH & Co. KG in order to better handle the requirements of striking the new coins. These coins will have a very large 3-inch diameter.

Additional encouragement came from looking through a collection of well-worn late 19th and early 20th century coins kept by his grandfather in an old leather coin purse.
