New U.S. Mint Marketing Approach Needed?
Dave Harper’s Buzz
Sales of the Disabled American Veteran commemorative silver dollars have been ongoing since their debut Feb. 25. The Boy Scouts commemorative dollar goes on sale March 23. This close sequencing makes me think again about the best way to market commemorative coins. Dyed-in-the-wool collectors will buy what they will buy no matter the timing. But what proportion of potential buyers meets this description? Judging by the declining maximum mintages, the obvious answer is there are fewer of them.

Left, Right, and Center
NGC
I was interviewed last year by a reporter for the New York Times on the subject of Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial and the commemorative cents that were being issued to mark that occasion. One of the questions he asked me is why Lincoln faces right on Victor D. Brenner’s cent when all of our other circulating coins have portraits facing left. Without hesitation I answered, “Because Brenner was probably left-handed.”

Renewable Energy the Theme of the Latest Niobium Coin
Numismaster
Renewable energy is the theme of the Austrian Mint’s 2010 edition of the silver niobium 25-euro coin series. The coin is emblematic of the growing global goal for renewable and cleaner energy as the world’s natural energy resources are limited and rapidly dwindling. The obverse of the coin depicts a tree in the center, representative of the world’s vegetation. Coming out of the tree is a spiral reflecting the continuous cycle of the world’s four elements: earth, wind, water and fire, all of which are required to keep the tree alive and allow it to flourish.

2010 ANZAC Day $1 Coin
Perth Mint
The Perth Mint’s ANZAC Day $1 coin program is a major numismatic tribute inspired by the deep significance of 25 April 1915, the day Australian forces landed on a hostile shore on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. … The 2010 ANZAC Day $1 coin pays tribute to the Royal Australian Navy.  With a design portraying HMAS Parramatta, a ‘River’ Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer built prior to World War I and the image of a Leading Seaman from the same era, the coin reflects the RAN’s long history of professionalism, discipline and courage.  Including a silhouetted bugler, the words ‘Lest We Forget’ and the date of ANZAC Day – April 25 – the reverse also symbolises the nation’s extreme gratitude to those sailors who have made the supreme sacrifice.

About the Author

Tim Shuck is a life-long Midwestern resident, and started collecting coins after finding an Indian Head cent on the ground at his childhood farm home. Additional encouragement came from looking through a collection of well-worn late 19th and early 20th century coins kept by his grandfather in an old leather coin purse. Current collecting interests include U.S. types from the Civil War era through the early 1930's, and Colonial and Early American coins.
