Daily gold report: Monday 16th July

THE PRICE OF GOLD barely moved early Monday, trading in a $1 range before rising to break $668 per ounce as the US open drew near.

“Overall trading is not that great, and I don’t see buying interest from Indonesia,” said a bullion dealer in Singapore to Reuters. “Demand from Thailand is still OK because of the Thai baht.”

“Some people are buying gold because of a slight increase in oil prices,” another told the newswire from Hong Kong, “but the market has been stuck in a range in the last couple of days.

Import Restrictions Imposed on Cypriot Coins

The ACCG deplores this unprecedented extension of UNESCO inspired import restrictions to include historical coins of possible Cypriot origin. In this action, without stating any justification or disclosing reasons for this decision, the State Department departed from its prior decisions exempting coins from import restrictions - even though the solid factual basis for this exemption has not changed. Under the CPIA statute, import restrictions should only be imposed on artifacts “found in the ground”. There is no statutory authority to impose import restrictions based on where an artifact was made.

Rare coins on display at weekend exhibit, show

Coin collectors and enthusiasts from across Canada and the U.S. will be in Niagara Falls this weekend for the 54th annual Canadian Numismatic Association convention. “Coins are part of our history in Canada. They are a part of who we are,” said Peter Kostyk, a coin collector and vice-chairman of the convention. Kostyk said the convention is the largest of its kind in Canada and more than 70 dealers will be there with displays of coins, paper money, Canadian Tire money, jewelry and other collectibles. The convention is open to the public this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and Convention Centre on Fallsview Boulevard.
