The ANA Pre-Show is scheduled the three days prior to each ANA World’s Fair of Money convention. The 2011 Chicago ANA Pre-Show will be held Aug. 13-15 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. In 2012 the ANA Pre-Show will be held Aug. 4-6 in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The ANA Pre-Show returns to Chicago Aug. 10-12 in 2013.

Live auctions will be held during the 2011 Chicago World’s Fair of Money, Aug. 16-20; the 2012 Philadelphia show, Aug. 7-11; and the 2013 Chicago show, Aug. 13-17.

In a July 7 letter to President Clifford Mishler, Krause explained that health reasons precluded his attendance at the Board of Governors meetings in Florida in January and in March in Fort Worth during the ANA National Money Show.

“Although I feel in generally good health, it has become increasingly difficult for me to travel,” Krause said to President Mishler. “Consequently, I don’t feel I can serve the Board or the ANA membership to the fullest extent. I think it is proper for me to step aside sooner than later. It has been my pleasure to serve with you and all the Board members during the last three years.”

Krause was elected to the Board in 2007 and reelected in 2009. To most, he is “just plain Chet.” He is a member of the ANA Hall-of-Fame who has been recognized with virtually every honor the Association can bestow, including the Medal of Merit, Glenn Smedley Memorial Award, Exemplary Service Award, Numismatist of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and the ANA’s highest honor, the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award for Distinguished Service.

During Krause’s tenure on the Board of Directors, the ANA has hired a new executive director, Larry Shepherd, stabilized its finances, increased donations, expanded educational programs and approved a third annual show, the Fall National Money Show, which debuts in Pittsburgh in 2011.

“I am sure everyone shares my sadness at losing Chet’s wisdom and sage advice,” said Shepherd. “I will miss Chet’s guidance and opinions, which I value and respect greatly. I thank Chet for his love of the ANA and his devotion to the hobby. There are very few people in the history of the ANA who have done as much for this organization – or the hobby – as Chet.”

Mishler echoed Shepherd’s sentiments. “We have greatly valued Chet’s contributions to the Board and will miss his wise and experienced counsel. At the same time, we welcome Alan back to the Board and are pleased that Chet’s seat on the Board is being placed in such capable hands.

Herbert, of Belle Fourche, S.D., will succeed Krause on the Board and be installed during the World’s Fair of Money in Boston, August 10-14. In accordance with ANA bylaws, any vacancy on the Board of Governors is offered to the person who failed to be elected as Governor by the least number of votes in the most recent election. He received 3,613 votes in the 2009 election, the most of any unsuccessful candidate.

Herbert previously served on the ANA Board of Governors from 1999-2001, from 2003-07 and from 2008-09, when he was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Radford Stearns. Mishler said he Herbert will be designated to assume the ANA Committee assignments held by Krause, serving as the Board member designee on the Bylaws and Ethics Committee, along with Governor Joe Boling, and on the Finance, Budget and Audit Committee.

Herbert is an ANA Life Member and former chair of the Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Membership and Terms and Standardization committees. He is known as “The Answer Man” in his popular columns for Numismatic News, World Coin News, Bank Note Reporter and Coins Magazine.

Shepherd stressed the importance of branding Chicago as the home of the summer ANA World’s Fair of Money, noting the success FUN has had branding Orlando as its home, and Whitman establishing Baltimore as a show destination.

“By selecting a single good location, the ANA will brand its summer convention as an annual ‘coin show destination’ that all collectors and dealers will strive to attend. The dates will be tightly fixed, the location well known and easily accessible at a reasonable cost. But most importantly, it will give us an opportunity to expand our show and set it apart from all others.”

Shepherd said the convention hall space available at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center (formerly the Rosemont Convention Center) in Chicago allows the ANA to increase bourse space, create more room for museum-quality exhibits, provide free space for clubs and professional organizations to meet, and provide more table options to attract new dealers and first-time buyer tables.

By encouraging specialty numismatic organizations to gather for the World’s Fair of Money, those organizations could make the summer ANA the destination for all of their annual meetings, symposiums and educational programs. Specialty numismatic organizations would be encouraged to offer educational content to all ANA members, with the ANA coordinating its presentations with those of specialty organizations, thus making it possible to further expand educational offerings. In addition, the time slot between the “Official Pre-Show” and the World’s Fair of Money could be used to add educational classes and tie-ins to Summer Seminar.

In a report to the Board of Governors, Shepherd cited several reasons why Chicago is an ideal site for the World’s Fair of Money:

* It is home to a large and dedicated collector base
* It is consistently one of the top two choices among members as a show site
* It is centrally located and has the single best airport in the country
* It is a prime vacation and recreation destination
* It is the most convenient location for all ANA members nationwide
* Previous ANA shows in Chicago have been extremely successful
* No other major coin organization has branded Chicago as its location for a major show.

In addition, having one venue for the summer show allows the ANA to make more efficient use of its convention preparation efforts, to negotiate multi-year convention and hotel contracts, work with familiar vendors and save significantly on signage and decorating costs.

Shepherd said the Chicago location would be evaluated after each year to ensure it would be the right choice for a longer term commitment.

“The most important benefit is that we can change the dynamics of the ANA World’s Fair of Money so that it sets this show apart from every other coin show and establishes this show as the numismatic event of the year, that all must attend,” Shepherd said.

Clubs are invited to help the ANA celebrate the week by participating in a number of fun and educational events involving geography on coins. A scavenger hunt will be held in the form of a “road trip” visiting beautiful places that have inspired designs on currency, and a program will be available for clubs to hold at their April meetings. Prizes will be awarded for individuals and clubs.

A wealth of resources will be available on www.money.org, including a sample press release and proclamation, interactive flier, lesson plans for teachers, and online games for kids and adults. The Edward C. Rochette Money Museum will be creating a traveling exhibit available to clubs and offering fun activities and coins for youth who visit the museum.
