1969-S Doubled die obv. Lincoln Cent in Regional Auction
1969-S Doubled die obv. NGC MS-63BN. Listed in the Cherrypicker’s Guide as FS-028. This is one of the most dramatic and rare Lincoln cent doubled dies. Doubling is very strong on all the obverse lettering, as well as the date.
Undoubtedly the mint removed this die from commission very early and caught almost all the coins made with it. Despite being discovered almost 40 years ago, only about two dozen pieces have been found, and most have been in circulated condition.
While the 1909-S VDB is often called the “Grandfather” of the set, auction records have proven that for those with the financial ability and appreciation, the 1969-S doubled die is the undisputed “King” of the set.
The last two pieces that sold at auction were a PCGS AU-58 example sold by Bowers and Merena for $42,550 and a PCGS MS-64 Red example sold by Heritage for $126,100.
This piece is the finest graded by NGC, and PCGS has only graded 3 pieces finer (all MS-64) in all color designations, ranking this piece very high among the two dozen or so known pieces. A piece for those who want the “King.”
This Coin will be offered at Sonny Henry’s Coin & Currency Auction on October 4, 2008
The sale will start at 2 p.m. at the Midwest Center for Christian Living at the intersection of I-80 and Exit 77. The address is 599 Canaan Drive across from Flying “J” Truck Stop in Lasalle.
