I would like an expert opinion about a penny that I’ve been holding on to for sometime. Found this penny among many other wheat’s while metal detecting. I must have looked at this penny at least a hundred times under powerful magnification, many angles, under different lighting, trying to clearly determine the "3? at the end of 194?. Sometimes I get the image of a "3" using 20 to 40x magnification. I do know that it is of the “San Francisco” mintage. The penny got my attention because of the bright gold-like toning along with the "wood grain" texture. From what I've read about the 43-S on bronze planchet, this fits the description. Unfortunately this penny is in poor condition because of a long life in the ground and is quiet pitted. The back is dark brown in color.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just thought you need to know that the proof 1974 S aluminum penny isn't worth anything! It's illegal to own, and the U S Secret Service can make Stewart Blay, or anyone else turn it in to them. I think that law stinks, but it's still an illegal penny to own! The smithsonian has one too, but can't sell theirs either! But they could sell another illegal 1933 st. gaudens $20 gold coin, that's ok since it came back from Egypt!
