Fire disrupts coin production line at CA mint
A fire at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg has closed a coin plating production line.
The blaze, the second in two years at the mint, started about 2:30 a.m. CT in a section where coin blanks are manufactured, plant officials said. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
A small crew of employees evacuated the building on Lagimodiere Boulevard and there were no injuries, the mint said. Normal operations and public tours resumed later in the day in areas that were not affected by the fire.
The damaged equipment included a tank used for washing coins and some plumbing. A Winnipeg newspaper reported about $500,000 in damage, but the mint says no estimate has been made.
