Although not a coin collector, Robert McGough found his way to John Albanese to assist in getting his “heirloom” authenticated and certified.

Beginning with this article: The 1863 $10 Gold Eagle, Doug Winter is going to focus on issues that he regards as “Forgotten Rarities.” These are coins that are truly rare but which, for a variety of reasons, do not get the fanfare that they deserve.

Change may be in the air at one or more coin grading services, but dealers, collectors and investors will find business as usual at Certified Acceptance Corp. (CAC). That’s the company’s message to the hobby in the wake of reports that at least one of the two largest grading services is considering the establishment of “premium-quality” grade designations.

The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coin and Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Bronze Medal on March 18, 2010

A possibly unique gold coin celebrating the assassination of Julius Caesar will go on display at the British Museum today – the Ides of March, marking the 2,054th anniversary of his death.

NGC graders are fortunate to have seen more coins than anyone, but they always take time to appreciate truly special coins. The unexpected encounter with this 1872-CC $20 is one such example. It is the Highest Graded example known

The United States Mint today announced that it will begin accepting orders for the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar beginning at noon Eastern Time (ET) on February 25, 2010.

Commem’s are one of the most popular US coins series combining both beautiful designs and a capsule of US history.Tom Delorey give his opinions on the “Ten Most Significant U.S. Commemoratives Coins”

Numismatic Conservation Services provides some educational tips on Recognizing Coin Holders That Contain PVC. Over time, an oily film—that sickly, green slime can settle onto a coin and damage the surface.

Bowers and Merena Auctions will be offering a 1879-O Class I Branch Mint Proof Morgan Dollar In Baltimore. Easily the rarest and also among the most popular Morgan Dollars with advanced collectors are the branch mint proofs–coins that are so rare, in fact, that many numismatists have never even seen one of these specimens

Doug Winter asks the question, “What Are Pedigrees and Why Are They Important?” Coins with good pedigrees often command premium prices over coins with no history. There are a number of reasons for this.

Bowers and Merena Auctions will be selling the undisputed “King of Barber Coinage,” the rare and eagerly sought 1901-S Quarter. The San Francisco Mint struck a mere 72,664 Quarters in 1901, which snatched the record low mintage for the Barber series from the hands of the 1896-S (188,039 pieces produced

Gold coins basically come with three types of luster: satiny, frosty and prooflike. Doug Winter provides invaluable information on the Luster of US Gold Coins and the pros/cons of each.

Another exceptional article by Tom Delorey about “The Phantom Silver Dollars Of 1895“. The Morgan Dollar has long been one of the most popular American coin series, apparently second only to the Lincoln cent in the number of people who collect it in some manner, and the 1895-P dollar has long been called “The King of Morgan Dollars.”

NGC has certified a Zachary Taylor Presidential $1 coin error that bears the date 2010 D. The Zachary Taylor coin was the fourth Presidential dollar released in 2009 and should correctly bear the date 2009, not 2010. This is the first time that the wrong date has been reported on an edge-lettered US dollar.

The 10th Hong Kong Champion Auction will be held on February 24 at the renowned Hyatt Regency Hotel in, Hong Kong, and features a rich selection of Chinese coins and banknotes certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Paper Money Guaranty (PMG).

The United States Mint has released to the Federal Reserve Banks the first new Presidential $1 Coin of 2010, honoring former President Millard Fillmore.

Ken Potters discusses his thoughts on “Is it an Error Coin or a Variety?” along with how to differentiate between errors and varieties.

Doug Winter offers up a great article on “Deciding What Coins to Collect” after having conversations with a few new and more experienced collectors.

This club is private, small, exclusive, and sophisticated. A major purpose of the club is to educate collectors, and another major purpose is to foster cooperation and friendship among collectors.

Baldwin’s 48th Hong Kong Coin Auction took place a little earlier than usual this year, in-line with the Hong Kong International Coin Convention and Antique Watch Fair. Here are the auction results.

This is a Must Read article for anyone interested in Branch Mint proof Gold.

Over the last two days, Stack’s held its annual January Americana in its private gallery in New York City. The sale began with a packed auction room and saw spirited and competitive bidding throughout both sessions. A total of $5 Million in rare coins and currency was sold.

The numismatic press recently announced that the new 2010 cents having a shield reverse were inexplicably released in Puerto Rico in advance of their scheduled February release date. NGC has received a number of these for certification

While working on the third edition of his Dahlonega gold coin book. Doug Winter reviews the PCGS and NGC population figures in order to help establish overall and comparative rarity levels for each issue from this mint

Laura Sperber provides some thoughts on The Size and Scope of Today’s Rare Coin Market. Always a good read, Laura offers up a “No Holes Bared” evaluation of the current market.

DVD’s of the educational presentations delivered at the Money Show of the Southwest are now available for collectors from Cointelevision.com, which is a free video news service website that offers video clips from these coin conventions as well as segments from many educational presentations.

Recently CoinLink has been running a number of articles centered around both the concept and desirability of “Origianl Surfaces” on coins. In the upcoming Stacks Americana Sale this week, there is a perfect example of the type of coin we have been talking about, Lot 3534 : an 1860-D Half Eagle PCGS MS-63.

Held as part of the 38th annual New York International Numismatic Convention, A.H. Baldwins & Sons New York Sale proved to be a welcome move away from the subdued bidding of 2009. The majority of the interesting lots offered during the course of the week were from the Baldwin’s/Dmitry Markov/M&M auction and the high prices achieved reflected the recent trend for buyers paying well above estimate for quality and rarity.

During 2009, Doug Winter wrote a series of “ten rarest” articles on all the major denominations of Liberty Head gold coinage. Here he presents The Ten Rarest Early Quarter Eagles.

Continuing with News across the web, we have a new posting of – Coin News Daily – providing short excerpts and links to other news across the web that we have found, and which you may find of interest.
