What’s New on CoinLink ……..
The top-rated sets of Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes in the PCGS Set Registry have been sold in a multi-million dollar private sale by Legend Numismatics of Lincroft, New Jersey. The 93 coins include many of the finest known examples and the unique 1870-S half dime that was individually valued in this transaction at $1.4 million.

The Certified Acceptance Corp. (CAC) is now accepting membership applications from collectors. Those who meet certain requirements will be eligible to submit certified coins directly to the company for evaluation.

Doug Winter discusses Preparing for the 2009 ANA Convention. “Amazingly, it’s time for yet another Summer ANA Convention. This year’s edition is going to be held on August 5th through August 9th at the Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles and if past shows are any indication, this will be one of the best coins shows of the year.”

Heritage Auctions will be offering a Brass 1776 Continental Dollar, possibly the Finest Known, in the Pre ANA Signature sale in Los Angeles on July 31st. Examples of Continental Dollars are known in brass, pewter, and silver. The pewter pieces are common, those in brass are rare, and examples in silver are extremely rare.

Marvin Mallon, President of HobbySoft has announced they are closing their business. Hobbysoft produced the popular Coin Keeper software. The statement said,”The present state of the economy, the dwindling number of young people entering the hobby and the advanced age of others and myself here at Compu-Quote are the responsible reasons for this action.”

2009 Silver Proof Set Available July 17 from the US Mint. The 2009 United States Mint Silver Proof Set contains 18 coins, each bearing the “S” mint mark of the United States Mint at San Francisco.

The Finest Certified 1838 No Drapery Quarter, PCGS MS68 CAC to be Offered at Auction. Heritage will be offering the single finest certified example of the 1838 No Drapery quarter in our upcoming Los Angeles Signature Auction, to be held July 31-August 2. American Numismatic Association Past President Kenneth Bressett and former ANA authentication expert Mary Sauvain each were presented the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Numismaticsat the ANA’s 41st annual Summer Seminar. The doctorates were given to recognize longtime dedication to Summer Seminar as instructors.

An article by Len Ratzman form the California Numismatist Magazine has been posted. Len recounts his pursuit to locate information on the supposed and illusive Two-Legged Buffalo Nickel

Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics gives her outlook for the Second Half of 2009 “We expect the market to slowly start to regain the strength we saw in June. The climax should be during the ANA show (or possibly the week after). The demand for better properly graded “fresh” coins is very strong even now during the summer. ”

What’s New on CoinLink ……..

Certified population figures can be helpful but they can also be confusing. Take, for instance, the 1875 gold dollar in Proof. This is a coin with a reported original mintage of 20. But it has a combined PCGS/NGC population of 24 (twelve at each service). Something is obviously not right here. Doug Winter Investigates.

The American Numismatic Association’s 2009 World’s Fair of Money® will be held Aug. 5-9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and will feature more than 1,100 dealers and vendors, world-class exhibits, 15 mints from four continents and education presentations for every age and interest level.

Award-winning numismatic author, Q. David Bowers will be the featured speaker at the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) Share the Knowledge seminar during the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money convention in Los Angeles.

Bowers and Merena Auctions returned to Baltimore for the second time in 2009 to present the Official Auction of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center June 10-13. The auction of the nearly 2,500 lots realized a total of $4,225,995 over three live sessions.

On January 9th, 2010, George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books will offer for sale at public auction The Stack Family Library, a remarkable numismatic library carefully assembled over seven decades by the New York numismatic firm founded by brothers Morton and Joseph and ably carried on by Norman, Benjamin, Harvey, Susan, and Lawrence Stack.

During the last year Doug Winter been working on a series of articles that discusses the ten rarest individual issues in each of the Liberty Head denominations. This installment covers The Ten Rarest Gold Dollars.

Heritage will be offering The Louis Bassano Collection of U.S. Commemoratives as a part of the 2009 August Los Angeles, CA US Coin Auction, taking place July 30-August 1. Every one of the nearly 150 beautiful coins in this collection grades MS66 or higher. Senator Bassano was one of the most important and beloved figures in New Jersey politics.

NGC Ancients Grades Armenian Rarity – A box of “old coins” purchased for $28.25 at an estate sale near Burlington, VT held an unexpected surprise: its contents are estimated to be worth more than $15,000 because it included one of the most important Armenian coins in existence. The prize coin was an Armenian bronze follis of “Kiurike the Kouropalates” identified by NGC Ancients

Douglas Winter Numismatics has been chosen to sell the Tri-Star Collection of Proof gold dollars. This collection, which was formed by one of the savviest collectors of gold coins in today’s numismatic market, includes a dozen very rare Type Three Proof gold dollars dated between 1856 and 1878.

The Hollywood stars will surrender the spotlight for a night when a different kind of American star takes to the podium at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Beverly Hills: A historic 1854-S quarter eagle, graded VF35 NGC, will lead the Platinum Night offerings of Heritage Auction Galleries’ August 2009 Los Angeles U.S. Coin Auction

The numismatic consumer watchdog organization Numismatic Consumer Alliance, Inc. (NCA). has recovered nearly $900,000 for buyers who paid far more for coins than they were worth. The money represented full refunds in 16 recent disputes.
