NGC a recently certified a newly discovered South Africa 6 Pence dated 1928. It is the only known example bearing this date. The coin was first spotted in an English country auction where it was cataloged with an unusual notation: the coin’s date was not listed in the standard series reference. It was purchased by a dealer who had a strong suspicion about the its origin.

What’s New ……….

Numismatic History by Doug Winter – One of the more interesting (and lesser known) gold coin auctions that I’ve attended was the sale of the Stetson Collection which was conducted by the old Bowers and Merena in May, 1993.

On May 21, 2010, Stack’s will present the Nashville Sale in conjunction with the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Nashville Expo that will be held on May 20-22. The sale will feature U.S. coins and will also present the Q. David Bowers Reference Collection of Confederate States of America bonds. Rarities abound, as do other interesting and more affordable pieces.

Doug Winter shares a Coin Profile on the 1878-CC Half Eagle. The 1878-CC is among the rarest Carson City half eagles, both in terms of overall and high grade rarity.

Today, April 22nd, marks the 40th anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement Earth Day and we offer up a Green Alternative for Gold and Silver Bars.

A somewhat disappointing online launch of the Newly Redesigned $100 Federal Reserve note has been posted, including a video of the new note. We will update this as the Treasury pulls its act together.

Dennis Hengeveld offers up an article on An introduction to Gobrecht Silver Dollars 1836-1837. Gobrecht Dollars have fascinated both collectors and researchers since they were minted, first in 1836, and for the last somewhere in the 1870’s as re-strikes. And collectors love them.

Numismatic Conservation Services has posted an article on The Effect of Carbon Spots on Copper-Nickel Coins. he term “carbon spots” refers to tiny black concentrations of corrosion. Oftentimes these are so small as to escape notice by the naked eye, though they may be seen with low-power magnification.

Daniel Frank Sedwick, LLC announced this week that their seventh Treasure Auction on April 7-9 realized $1.37 million and over 94% of the 2160 lots sold, well exceeding the pre-auction estimate.

The headline-making authentication of the long-missing Walton specimen 1913 Liberty Head nickel by a team from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in 2003 is the subject of an episode in a new program, Accidental Fortune, to be shown on The Learning Channel (TLC) on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

The Royal Mint launched its newly designed 2010 Britannia coin series. The Paquet Reverse double eagles of 1861 are among the few U.S. circulating coinage designs that can be definitively attributed to Paquet. Heritage is offering an important example in the upcoming CSNS Signature Auction.

The United States Mint today announced the release of products including a two-roll set and 100-coin bags featuring the Hot Springs National Park quarter on April 19, 2010.
