Superior Galleries a division of Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange (DGSE) abruptly announced that they were suspending all auction activities effective immediately. This includes the scheduled Santa Clara Auction that was to have started yesterday.

The interests of rare U.S. currency collectors, and numismatists across the spectrum, have been piqued by Heritage Auction Galleries with the announcement of the discovery of a previously unseen significant rarity in the form of a 1915 $5 Federal Reserve Bank Note type.

While browsing the upcoming Stacks Saint Ludovico and Firth of Clyde Collections auction catalog set to commence on April 22-23rd at the Doubletree Hotel Chicago in Rosemont , Ill., we cam across a most unusual and unique item: an Ancient Coin Die Tiberius, 14-37 A.D.

Last week, Stack’s concluded its three-day sale of the Entlich, White Oak, Gross, and St. Andre Collections in Baltimore. This extensive, almost 4,000 lot sale took place over March 23-25, and touched on many aspects of the numismatic field

Greg Reynolds has posted Part 4 of his six part series on The Greatest All-Time Collection of Middle Date Large Cents: A Review of the Naftzger 2 Auction — Large Cents of the 1820s. Very informative with observations from Chris McCawley, Jim McGuigan and Greg Hannigan.

The American Numismatic Association Board of Governors has approved a balanced operating budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year, signaling a momentous financial turnaround for the ANA, which performed under a projected $1.4 million operating deficit in fiscal year 2008-09.

Doug Winter provides an interesting follow-up article on “The Warehouse Theory of Coin Investing“. The gist of this updated article is that there are certain coins that remain in such demand with collectors that a sound investment theory might be to stockpile attractive examples of these and work with a specialized dealer who could then, over the course of time, resell them to other collectors.

United States Mint Director Ed Moy will present the Nation’s first coin with readable Braille at 10:00 a.m. on March 26, at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. NFB President Marc Maurer will join in the presentation of the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar

Part 3 of Greg Reynold’s series on the Natfzger Middle Date Large Cent sale conducted by Ira and Larry Goldberg in February has been posted. In this installment, Reynolds presents a broad interpretation of the results of the auction, and a discussion of the 1817 cent, with fifteen stars. with comments and observations from cataloguer, Chris McCawley and dealer/collector Greg Hannigan.

Certified Assets CEO Bob Higgins has announced that his company will be displaying the unique “Celebration Mickey” gold sculpture in Baltimore and a number of other shows across the country this spring. “Celebration Mickey” is the largest solid gold sculpture ever created in the United States, and the most valuable Disney collectible in the world! The two-foot tall, one-of-a-kind sculpture is molded out of 1,500 troy ounces (more than 100 pounds) of 24-karat pure gold.

Dominion Grading Service has just certified the Barbieri Cache of “Smoking Liberty” Seated Quarters, a most interesting and eye catching die variety found on an 1857 Liberty Seated Quarter dollar. Only about 30 are known to exist.

In the week from March 9-14, 2009, the German auction house Künker sold more than 7,400 historic coins and medals, totaling more than EUR 7.5 million, in Osnabrück (Northern Germany). The hammer prices of the sold items were on average 40 per cent above the estimate.

Collectors Universe, Inc. announced that Chief Executive Officer Michael Haynes will depart the Company as of April 1, 2009. Michael McConnell, a member of the Board of Directors of the Company, has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer.
