Top Registry Set of $10 Gold Coins, the Jim O’Neal Collection of Indian Head Eagles Sells on Platinum Night at FUN. Part 1 of a two part series on this incredible collection by Greg Reynolds for CoinLink

The United States Mint launched the first redesigned one-cent coin (penny) in 50 years in a ceremony Feb 12th-the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The redesigned Lincoln penny, released into circulation today, features a log cabin on the coin’s reverse (tails side), emblematic of Lincoln’s humble roots in Kentucky.

Austin M. Sheheen Jr. of Camden, S.C. has been appointed treasurer of the American Numismatic Association, President Barry Stuppler has announced. An ANA member since 1958, he replaces Adna G. Wilde Jr., who passed away in November.

Proof gold coinage has been called the “caviar of numismatics” – and with good reason. Everyone loves a nice Proof gold coin and there is no denying the rarity of these issues. But compared to Proof Bust silver coins, most Proof gold is common. Doug Winter provides some thoughts for collectors on Bust Proof Coinage in Part One: Half Dimes and Dimes.

Gold rarities in all denominations led prices realized in Heritage’s Official Auction of the February 2009 Long Beach Coin Expo. Some 6500 lots from 280 consignors were included in the auction, which took place Feb. 5-8, 2009 in Long Beach, Calif. Prices Realized totaled over $13 Million

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth (1809), the United States Mint is producing two new pennies in 2009. The first is scheduled for release Thursday, February 12th on Lincoln’s birthday.

The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild reports thatthe State Department recently announced import restrictions on a wide array of Chinese cultural artifacts, including some coins. The Chinese restrictions specifically cover archaeological materials representing China’s cultural heritage from the Paleolithic Period (c. 75,000 B.C.) through the end of the Tang Period (A.D. 907)
