World Coin Auction Posts World Class Results!

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Auction Galleries’ most recent offering of World and Ancient Coins, held January 7 & 8, 2007 in New York City, in conjunction with the New York International Numismatic Convention, realized $5,084,532 for 3,112 lots offered, although after auction sales are still ongoing and are expected to push the final total even higher.
“This was an exceptionally strong auction,” said Warren Tucker, Director of World Coin Auctions for Heritage, “with some outstanding collections serving as anchors. One of the most intriguing was the Treasures of the Sea Collection, featuring a large group of coins recovered from the treasure ships Atocha and Santa Margarita, lost off the Florida Straits during a hurricane on September 5, 1622. A fortune in gold, silver, precious gems and rare artifacts lay undisturbed at the bottom of the sea until 1973, when Mel Fisher’s Treasure Salvors began the process of bringing these treasures to light. Over 2,700 4 and 8 Reales silver coins from the Tierra Firma treasure fleet were presented in this offering, inspiring some of the most active bidding I’ve ever seen on an auction floor. In fact, most of the lots offered realized final prices far in excess of our pre-auction estimates. When all was said and done, this spectacular collection realized nearly $750,000.”

“The numismatic hobby has been enjoying a period of great strength for several years,” Tucker said, “which shows no sign of diminishing anytime soon. World coins in particular have shown a great deal of growth recently, marked by ever-increasing prices realized in our auctions.”

“We’re already looking ahead to our next auction,” said Tucker, “to be held May 31-June 1, 2007 in Long Beach, California. Our consignment deadline is April 10, so I’d encourage anyone interested in being a part of this exciting event to contact me as soon as possible.”
